Heterogeneous clusters

• Cluster can mix dissimilar PCs and other machines
• Heterogeneous complications:
  • Speed differences complicate load balance
  • Big/little-endian, NUXI, and data format translation
  • May need multiple object files
  • Might not be able to use DSM
• General rule:
  Avoid heterogeneity unless it helps performance by providing specialized devices/abilities
